Schindler has assessed the environmental performance of its suppliers since 2004. Life-cycle assessments of production sites have shown that raw-material consumption (mainly steel) accounts for most of the environmental impact. The environmental performance of the (steel) suppliers to Schindler is therefore crucial in determining Schindler’s environmental performance.

History of supplier evaluation (cont)

2006
The annual survey of 2005 was replaced by a supplier quality and environmental qualification and monitoring system. Corporate Purchasing now actively drives its suppliers to improve their environmental performance in order to reach the anticipated qualification level (ISO 14001 or similar certification and non-certified alternate environmental management system). The monitoring system shall contain approximately the top 20 strategic suppliers by purchasing volume.

2005

In 2005, the indicator was changed from % by number to % by purchasing volume. A total of 259 suppliers representing approx. 25 % of the purchasing volume 2004 were assessed.

Though more suppliers were assessed than in 2004, the purchasing volume covered fell from approx. 50% to 25%, mainly due to the fact that the transparency depth of the purchasing volume was much higher (in 2005 purchasing volume amounted to CHF 3.71 billion compared with CHF 2.23 billion in 2004).
